Sapporo Clock Tower, nicknamed the Clock Tower, was built in 1878 as a performance hall for Sapporo Agricultural College. It is a building with a characteristic appearance with a large clock placed on a triangular roof. Conceived by W. Wheeler, who succeeded W.S. Clark and became the vice-principal, and is modeled on the wooden architectural style called balloon frame that was popular in the Midwestern United States at the time. The large clock with dials on the four sides of the clock tower is manufactured by Howard, Boston, and is a mechanical tower clock that uses weights for power.
It was designated as a national important cultural property in 1970, and was certified as one of the "100 Soundscapes of Japan" by the Environment Agency in 1996. Currently, it is used as a museum / hall.
